2020 Orientation Conference, October 27th, 8 a.m until 5 p.m.

The League’s Orientation Conference for elected officials is presented every four years and features the top legal and administrative authorities on municipal government in Alabama. Topics covered include: general powers of municipalities, duties of the mayor and council, municipal finances and the Open Meetings Act as well as required ethics training via the Alabama Ethics Commission. The role of the Alabama League of Municipalities, League special programs and advocacy engagement will also be discussed. Mayors and councilmembers are encouraged to enroll in the League’s Certified Municipal Official (CMO) Program, which consists of a series of continuing education programs designed specifically for elected municipal officials who voluntarily wish to receive formal training in municipal government. Officials who complete 40 credit hours of training are awarded the professional designation of Certified Municipal Official. With an additional 40 credit hours, participants earn the Advanced Certified Municipal Official designation. The highest designation, Emeritus, can be achieved through a combination of continuing credit hours and points. Training opportunities are available throughout the year, and the basic certification can be completed in as few as two calendar years.

2020 Municipal Leadership Institute, October 28-29
The League’s Municipal Leadership Institute (MLI) is held each year in the late fall or early winter. This year’s MLI focuses on economic and community development challenges and opportunities, including topics that explore recovering from the impact of COVID-19 on tourism, Main Street and downtown redevelopment, utility services and local retail environments. You will hear from economic, tourism and local government subject matter experts.
