SAVE Program Information
IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING THE SAVE PROGRAM and COMPLIANCE WITH
ALABAMA'S IMMIGRATION LAW.
The Alabama League of Municipalities (the League) has assisted in the development of a streamlined application process for using the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) Program to verify the immigration status of individuals seeking state and local benefits. The SAVE Program is a web-based service that helps federal, state and local benefit-issuing agencies, institutions, and licensing agencies determine the immigration status of benefit applicants.
Pursuant to the Beason/Hammon Alabama Taxpayer and Citizen Protection Act, originally passed in 2011 and amended in 2012, Alabama's municipalities are required to use the SAVE Program to verify the immigration status of certain individuals seeking certain benefits from a municipality.
Using this process allows a municipality to gain access to the SAVE Program more quickly and simply than the normal SAVE Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) process.
The League encourages all municipalities to strongly consider using the streamlined process. Municipalities, however, may also choose not to use this streamlined process for the listed approved benefits, but in doing so may be required by the SAVE Program to submit additional information regarding legal authorities and other aspects of its benefits programs before finalizing a SAVE MOA.
HOW TO REGISTER:
If your municipality has already started the registration process online, please do not re-register online with the SAVE Program. If your municipality has already registered online but is still awaiting approval, please submit an "
Authorities for the SAVE Program" without re-registering
In order to gain access to the SAVE Program, your municipality MUST first be registered online at: http://www.uscis.gov/save. After registering, simply complete the "Authorities for the SAVE Program" document attached hereto and also found at [link to form] and submit it by fax to the SAVE Program, attention to "SAVE Registration" at (802) 860-6907.
